Monitoring works best if it is preventive

Outdoor surveillance is more than the number of cameras. If it is to prevent theft and vandalism, it must be linked to a manned guard centre. It's the reaction time of seconds that matters, whether it's just jumping a fence - or thousands of pounds worth of tools and building materials going missing.


It typically takes burglars less than 90 seconds to break open a container and empty it of valuables. That's why it's vital that your security cameras transmit live to a manned guard centre. From the control centre, the guard should be able to speak directly to the intruders. Other features such as sirens and fog alarms are also other useful tools that a guard can use to scare away intruders. If none of this works, the control centre should quickly dispatch a physical guard or the police.


Catch the thief before the damage is done

However, being connected to a manned security centre is no guarantee. What matters most is the response and handling time of the emergency centre. Lasse from Site-Security elaborates:



- Many people mistakenly believe that it is the number of cameras, the height of the masts and the number of stickers put up that stops thieves. But this is rarely the case. Because burglars are quick to break in, it's crucial that the control centre is also quick to respond to every alarm," says Lasse. This is what we in the security industry call 'response time'. The guard must then, via loudspeakers, manage to stop the burglars in their tracks.



The supplier must prove that they are worth the money

At Site-Security, they meet companies every day who have no idea how quickly their supplier handles their alarms. Site-Security wants to put an end to this trend. Recently, they have launched a customer portal. Here, each customer receives documentation of the monitoring centre's processing of their particular monitoring devices. When a customer has had intruders, they also receive a report. The report describes the process and links to the video recording itself.


The figures for each customer's surveillance are confidential and shared only with the customer. But director Lasse Østergaard-Jensen is happy to reveal the general figures:


- Over the past month, we have handled 41,245 alarms. The average response time was 19 seconds while the processing time was 36 seconds, concludes Lasse.




How to make demands:

Ask your supplier for the following figures:


Number of alarms: how many alarms their system detects. How many of the alarms are "verified"? That is, how many of them are actually with people and vehicles. A black bin bag blowing in the wind rarely does any harm.


Response time: How many seconds does it take from an alarm being triggered until a guard checks the camera?


Processing time: What is the time taken for an alarm to be triggered? Remember again that there is a difference between verified alarms, which typically take longer to process.


Call: how often is a physical guard or police dispatched. It is a waste of money to pay a guard to remove a black bin bag
